    Spear point knife kit

    I have done many different knife kits from Woodcraft. My criticism for this knife is the finish on the blade, makes for a difficult time removing epoxy squeeze out and finish without damaging the finish on the steel. Not sure weather it is painted or powder coated. It will look nice when done if you are careful. Also, the handle could be a little longer and/or a thumb grip added. Overall I think it is a nice knife.

    Tips for assembly

    Helpful tip after building a few. After cutting the scales and sanding/finishing the blade end of the scale, tape the finished end to prevent squeeze out on the scale. Glue on one scale. After about 10-15 minutes, clean up the epoxy on the blade end and the tang. When cured, drill the rivet holes from the tang side. Glue the second scale on, clean off the epoxy when set. When cured, drill through the blank using the existing holes. Shape, keeping enough thickness to countersink the rivets. After finishing, insert the rivets with a bit of Loctite. Works for me.

    First knife and I am hooked

    Overall I am very pleased as this was my first knife to make. As other have mentioned, the hex rivets stripped. I knew going in they were provided but after stage-drilling to countersink, I didn't like the fact that the excess holes would be a place to collect dirt, grime, etc. I decided to go with maple dowels to contrast the darker wood and am very pleased. I finished in boiled linseed oil and topped off with a fancy sheath. I purchased several other kits since there were on sale so looking forward to making more.

    Great Value!

    I would have given this blade a 5 rating if it wasn't for the Torex type scale pins. It's just a personal preference perhaps, but this type pin offers absolutely NO advantage over other types (i.e. Corby rivets, Loveless bolts or for that matter, even compression rivets). Perhaps if the Torex type screws were longer so they could be installed flush with the scales, I might have rated it higher. Overall, this is a good blade with what seems to be good stainless steel and has a nice satin finish. A great value for the price and absolutely fantastic if you catch it on sale.

    Good knife kit

    This is my first ever knife. I picked up this knife kit along with the tanto style and a few others when they were on sale so that I could practice before making the handles to the Zhen kitchen knives for presents. I like the kit, but don't really care for the rivets, or having them countersunk into the handle. I recognize that this is just personal preference, which is why I didn't use them at all. I picked up some 3/16" brass rod from the local big box store and epoxied (I used West Systems epoxy) the scales (stabilized maple burl) to the handle along with the three pins. Overall I'm pretty happy with how it came out and glad that I bought several of these. They will make great gifts, or a nice overall utility knife. I didn't find that mine was very sharp so i would recommend sharpening the blade once you are done making the handles.

    Nice Knife

    A good kit for a novice knife maker. Pick your own handle material and carefully file, sand, carve, and polish to a shape comfortable for your own hand. Hex screw rivets and epoxy hold scales (grip panels) to full-tang blade. I would prefer knife rivets or Corby screws, but the supplied screws are adequate. Quality of the steel seems OK, takes a good edge. If you take your time and pick nice material for scales you can wind up with a very nice knife.

    Nice kit

    Fairly easy to make and shape. I do not really care for the recessed screw rivets as it leaves a place for debris to collect. This is an easy fix with contrasting wood plugs or, for a more decorative touch, try the acrylic Inlace product also sold by Woodcraft. I have made all go the styles as gifts for my hunting family and each has been very well received. Packaging kit with a custom sheath would be nice.

    Great gift project !

    I was looking for some gift ideas when I found this kit in the catalog. I used bright orange Paduak for the handles wich contrasted nicely with the matte finish on the metal. The instructions were clear and simple and most crafters with basic skills and equipment should enjoy this product. If you order knife scales (handles),order extras incase you break one.(Do you hear the voice of experience?)

    Great Kit

    Great weekend or afternoon project. Perfect for someone just getting into woodworking. Instructions on website are helpful. A drum sander (or drum attachment to the drill press) is very helpful with these.
