Details

The WoodRiver® V3 No. 5-1/2 Bench Hand Plane is a jack plane slightly larger and heavier than the No. 5—ideal when you need more heft to get through challenging grain or more blade width for edge planing thick lumber. Generally considered an all-purpose plane, the No. 5-1/2 can perform many of the smoothing tasks of smaller planes and jointing tasks of larger planes. Additional features include soles and sides that are machined flat and square, lightly finished hardwood handles, and minimal tune-up required before use.

V3: Like our previous WoodRiver® Bench Hand Planes, our version 3 is based on the reliable Bedrock design and features heavy, stress-relieved ductile iron castings, fully machined adjustable frogs, and high carbon steel blades, but we took the opportunity between manufacturing runs to do a critical review and make a few improvements. We've changed the shape of the rear tote and increased the diameter of the blade adjustment wheel to make advancing the blade a bit easier. We improved the lateral adjustment lever and added a traditional style bearing for better control of the blade. We've made numerous changes to the castings that result in better "feedback" and a solid feel to the user. Working closely with our manufacturer, we've continued to improve the machining, finish, and functionality yielding hand planes that are meant to be used and offer extraordinary value.

Features:
  • Ideal for flattening, squaring and initial smoothing
  • Modeled after the Bedrocks, Stanley Tool’s very best line
  • Features fine-grained ductile iron castings and fully machined frogs
  • Soles and sides machined flat and square
  • Tools require minimal tune-up prior to use
Specifications:
  • Plane Dimensions (W x L): 2-7/8" x 14-15/16"

    Great Plane

I'm new to woodworking and this is my first plane, but with the help of a diamond stone and Rob Cosman sharpening/setup videos the plane performs beautifully. Now I can't stop squaring boards. THX

    Great first Plane

I have been watching Rob Cosman's YouTube videos and decided I really needed a hand plane in the workshop. I decided to order this one based on reviews and Rob's videos. I received the plane fast from Woodcraft and it has not disappointed me. In less than 30 minutes following Rob's video on set up I was taking shavings. based on how nice this plane is I plan now to get more like the low angle block plane. I highly recommend this plane for the price and quality.

    Wonderful and versatile plane

I can't express how happy I am with this plane! I use it on my shooting board, I use it on edges and faces and almost never have to reach for a longer plane to get a smooth enough surface for finishing. With a sharp blade this plane consistently gives me onionskin thin shavings. This plane delivers on the promise that hand planes give you a better surface than you could ever get with sandpaper. Sometimes, I even go out to the shop, pick up this plane and a scrap of wood and just make shavings for the fun of it! I highly recommend this plane.

Good looking plane but for a beginner I was expecting just a little instruction on what all the different screws are for etc. I’ve watched all videos of Rob Crossman but shouldn’t it have come with something. JB

    First ever hand plane

I loved this 5 1/2 plane right out of the box. What a great, well built and sturdy complaining for my shop. I then bought the number 4 plane.

Good plane for the price but not a do all plane

The Wood River 5-1/2 is a good heavy plane. The mass makes it great for a lot of surfacing work. The sole is nice and flat and the blade thick and sharpens well. I have used this plane quite a bit and I am happy with its performance. However, the plane I have will not work on my shooting board which is a disappointment. While the sole is dead flat the sides of the plane are not machined 90 degrees to the sole. This was a disappointment and the reason for 4 stars rather than 5 stars. By the way I have a Wood River No 6 and while mostly wonderful the sides are not 90 degrees to the sole. My Lei Neilson No. 3 smoother is flat and has sides 90 degrees to the sole so it is not my measuring device.

    WOW

First of all, this plane is beautiful! The grain in the tote and knob that I received is incredible. I'm sure you're thinking who cares how it looks, how does it perform? Well, if you take the time to set it up (look up Rob Cosman setting up the 5 1/2, that's the exact process I used) it will exceed your expectations. I was able to take very thin shavings and produce a glass smooth surface on cherry and maple (those were the only two I used it on thus far). I get incredible results and I couldn't be happier.. And for the price?! You can't beat it!

    Best

I own a lie Nielsen #41/2 and a #7, I needed something in between so I went for the wood river 51/2. This is my new favorite plane. It's the perfect weight, not too heavy to push through the work but heavy enough to stay engaged in the wood without having to bulldog down on the work. The fit and finish is excellent I was taking full length full width full length wispy thin silky smooth shavings within 40 minutes of opening the box with some blade honing of just a micro bevel and using the ruler trick on the flat of the blade. Buy this plane you won't be sorry

    Outstanding Plane

I already had the #3, #4, #7 planes (all V3)and I was happy with them...the new 4 1/2 and 5 1/2 should be called the V3.5s. They are much improved. New size of tote fits larger hands better. The adjuster mechanism is much improved. I bought this WR 5 1/2 and a premium 4 1/2 by another company on the same day. The depth adjuster on the WR is absolutely better than the V3s and better than any other plane I own and I have and use tons of planes. Lastly, since I already have many vintage Jack planes, I chose the 5 1/2 on a whim to see how I'd like the size. For the last year, I've kept WR 5 1/2 under my bench because I use it constantly. I seldom touch the other Jacks anymore. Great product. I highly recommend this WR 5 1/2 plane and also the WR 4 1/2.
