The original “Lignum vitae” (Guaiacum) is Latin for “wood of life”, and derives from its medicinal resin used to treat a variety of medical conditions from coughs to arthritis, and chips of the wood can also be used to brew a tea. Lignum vitae is one of the numerous durable, hard, and dense woods referred to as ironwood. On the Janka Scale of Hardness, which measures hardness of woods, lignum vitae ranks highest of the trade woods, registering at 4500 lbf.

Excellent quality bevel up spokeshave
Excellent quality bevel up spokeshave. I feel this is an excellent alternative to a wooden spokeshave kit and more durable. This spokeshave is machined well and is what I feel is excellent quality and value for the money I'm very satisfied. The quality of work produced when using it is excellent. The precision flat ground spokeshave blade. My approximate dimensions eyeballed in 1/32" using a 6" steel ruler. 1/8" thick, 23/32" width, 2" ands 27/32" length, bevel width 10/32" width. I did not measure any thread length or diameter yet. Excellent quality. My precision flat ground spokeshave blade out of the box is both smooth and flat corner to corner, lengthwise and across its width. The RC 60-64 hardness is pretty impressive and good enough for my needs. Excellent quality. My precision flat ground spokeshave blade out of the box cut thin ribbons on both pine and oak. Understanding wood grain direction will greatly improve your skills. I feel the bevel up performs better shaves easier and produces a smoother finish than my bevel down spokeshaves that have been restored and sharpened to a razor edge. I did gently round the somewhat sharp non cutting blade edge bottom that contacts wood opposite the bevel. This was maybe a little over 1/64" not even a full 2/64" to prevent any possibility of the non beveled edge from catching. This is an excellent quality bevel up spokeshave. Please continue manufacturing them and have any necessary parts available.

Very Good Buy
I purchased this a few months back. This is my first Spoke shave, so I decided to use it recently. When I opened the box I was impressed with the quality. Felt good in your hands, nice weight. It took me approximately 20 minutes to hone the blade razor sharp. I like that you can remove the studs for sharpening. When I reassembled it I used Loctite on the threads just for piece of mind. I have used it several times since then and it performs flawlessly.

Good spokeshave..Blade was almost dead flat out of the box which is rare..Solid, easy to adjust and takes a nice fine shaving after sharpening. very good for the money..

really heafty,love way it feels
it has enough weight to prevent bounce and catter,blade really easy to adjust to tissue thin wood shaving,works really to this and shape long bow,building bow for grandaughter,and tiller must be just right,this makes it really easy to adjust almost to final tiller,really easier than cabinet scrape

Good Sahve at a good price
I originally posted that I was very pleased with the exception of the blade being soft and chipping. I have been to long in amending this but shortly after my post I was contacted by Woodcraft. It turns out that the blade I got was a lemon or something because the replacement is far superior to the original. Woodcraft went out of their way to make this right and I was reminded why I love shopping there. (I WAS NOT BOUGHT OFF!!!) I love the heft of this guy. Others have said its too heavy to use one handed. I don't do much one handed work with a shave, but found that holding it in the middle and using it like a block plane it does fine though when set aggressively on hard wild grain its difficult as any shave is when using one handed. Keep it super sharp and dial it in right and it give nice clean cuts on end grain. I would recommend this shave to anyone.

Almost hit the mark
I really like the heft of this tool and the adjustments are simple. Its comfortable. The downside is the iron in this thing is way to soft to be effective on anything other than the softest woods. Took a sharpening right out of the box to get it ready ( as expected with any tool) and I was very pleased for about 5 minutes after getting it dialed in until I saw the edge was rolled over and chipped after a relatively light workout. The old wooden ones I have laugh at the work that brought this on to it's knees. Too bad too cause everything else on this thing is good.

Great shaving action, but too much heft.
Unique, low-angle blade cuts great. Too heavy/bulky for one-handed use, and takes some practice for a "light touch" application. Very little tuning was required. The blade was relatively easy to hone, however, mine came with a blade having a very slight high point in the mid-section, so honing took a while.

Good solid tool.
I enjoy using this spokeshave. It came almost ready to go with nice machining. The blade was easy to hone and able to take a keen edge. It works very well with the low angle cut. I use one or two pieces of paper to set the depth stop depending on what I'm looking for. Very easy to set up. If it has a down it is how long it takes to tear it down for a honing.

Very well built
This spokeshave is much better built than another I bought recently (Kunz) and works very well. However, the blade size, 3/4 inch long x 2 inch wide, precludes using it in a honing guide without a special built fixture,and is awkward to hold for free hand honing, otherwise it would rate 5 stars.

Excellent potential
I've been asked to review this tool before actual use,but I can say it was very easy to sharpen,and on testing it sliced paper thin shavings from a piece of walnut.It will be very useful and the primary tool in shaping the stock of the longrifle I'm building.

I found this Spokeshave too heavy to handle with one hand as the ad states. Only useful with both hands on heavy work.

Excellent value
Essentially a cast-iron version of a traditional wooden shave, with the addition of an adjustable shoe for controlling depth of cut, rather than an adjustable iron. The iron is very similar to a Hock shave iron sold for DIYers to make their own shaves, so thick and sturdy. Materials are first rate (including brass thumbnuts for the iron) and mating surfaces are cleanly machined to good tolerances. Throat is adjustable by moving the iron fore and aft, while depth of cut is adjusted with the shoe, which is held in place by two screws. The blade is reasonably flat, with a straight bevel on the upper edge, but needs lapping and honing for best performance. Personally, I like that Woodcraft do not charge you an extra hundred dollars to do the set-up work, as high-end makers usually do, and this is one of the reasons they can offer good tools at a competitive price. I tune up a tool to my own preferences anyway. On the negative side, this is a relative large tool (the handle span is about an inch more than a Stanley #151) and so a little heavy in cast iron. Some may prefer the extra heft, while those used to a light wooden shave may find this awkward. I bought the tool for finish shaping of guitar necks, where it does exactly what I need it to do.
