An update … and correction …

I purchased my first large cheese slicer kit from a Woodcraft store in Birmingham, AL. I recently completed the project and wrote a review. I am very pleased with the outcome. In my earlier review I noted that others had experienced issues with the tensioning bar and slicing wire. In my review I suggested that one might want to adjust the depth of cut for the pivot bar in order to get the slicing wire to match the kerf. A modest 1/4” adjustment solved the issue I was having. What I have discovered now is that my kerf—using a thin kerf saw blade—was cut on the right of the 3” line; that made my slicing wire not match perfectly with the saw kerf. I have ordered 4 more kits, and on them I will be sure that my saw kerf is on the left of the 3” line!

    Great kits!

I've made a couple dozen boards using these kits. The issue of getting the rounded wire end to engage with the rod is simple: I drill a 3/8" hole from the back, with my drill press set to just enter the saw cut, less than half way through the board, directly where the two interface. Then the loop drops right in and the rod slips through: easy. You can make a shallow plug to cover the hole, or just leave it open-for drainage. Form follows function.

    Sub standard

Bought the large kit and is absolute junk, from the metal for the handle not bent properly and too weak for job. The wire for slicing the cheese cannot be tightened enough without bending handle then it loosens right back up. Poor design and materials

    Well received gifts

I made a number of these for holiday gifts, Everyone really likes them. I used my Dremel and a very small bit to enlarge the slot to make sliding the wire onto the handle a bit easier. Worked very well - no problems at all

    Easy Cheesy

I craft cheese slicers all the time using this exact kit. The kit works great as long as I've cut and drilled properly. When I've done my part it takes 30 seconds to finish.

    Little on the Cheesy side

Purchased 4 of these for gifts. The plastic handle detracts from a nice end grain board. The wire (cutter) broke before I had the opportunity to struggle with the final assembly. I figured it was my heavy hand, the problem, the replacement wire (which I'd planned on including 1 extra with each gift ) can only be purchased as a 4 pk. - 2 small 2 lg wires for 7 bucks - I've got no use for the small wires since I purchased the lg. cutters Bottom line I'll be returning the 3 un-opened cutters and looking for alternative gift ideas

    Cheese Slicer Kit

Just built a cheese slicer using the Cheese Slicer Kit, came out great! One note: I tapered the end of the shaft that goes into the hole on my bench grinder which made it easier to slip the wire loop onto. Will be making more for gifts.

    Cheese slicer kit

I have put several of these together and they work really well. The wire tightens nicely and will make a clean thin cut to a regular size brick of cheese with the small or large kit. Be careful though my wife has me know making cheese boards for her entire family for Christmas.

    Works great

I’ve use this kit twice before and I am ordering a third one. It works really well and it really isn’t that difficult to get the wire under the metal retainer as other people have suggested. You just need to scrape out a little indentation using a pick or an awl.

    Works if you work it

I’ve built one so far, and ordering more. Inserting the wire into the groove is nearly impossible, but I found a solution: Carefully drill a 5/16” hole from the back side, exactly where the wire needs to hook onto the rod. Only drill to the bottom of the saw kerf, not all the way through. It creates a small chamber for the loop of the wire to fit. Get the hole just right, and you can plug it with a very short piece of dowel, leaving enough room for the wire to get below the saw kerf. Or leave the hole.

    Hard to assemble

I got it all together but it’s very hard to get the wire on the handle inside of the slot in the board. The instructions even tell you it will be hard and to use an awl or chisel yo make the hole larger. I don’t know how you’re supposed to get a chisel into a 1/8” wide slot to widen out the hole at the bottom.

    Easy build

Purchased this on sale in December of 2019. Followed the instructions to the letter and had no problems. Everything fit as it was supposed to. Was able to make in less than a day. The only thing that took any time was putting on the finish. Allowing time for the oil to dry took longer due to the cold weather. That's not a problem with the kit.

Looks nice, but the instructions are worthless

The instructions do not work with the supplied cheese slicer. There is no way to get the tiny wire around the post since the wire is too short. I wish I would have checked the length of the wire before ruining a cutting board. I'll figure it out, but it would have been nice if someone at Woodcraft would have tried to assemble the kit.
